Sauvie Island Family Session

I’ll take any chance I get to shoot at Sauvie Island. I love the charming scenery and peacefulness of the open countryside.

I’ve worked with this family for years. I photographed Toni and Jake’s wedding way back in 2017 and have since done several family shoots as their family has grown.

It’s always an honor to photograph clients throughout their lives. We met up at Bybee-Howell Park near the Sauvie Island Bridge. This is one of my favorite family photo locations in Portland.

The best time of the year for family photos at sauvie island

In the Summer months Sauvie Island is filled with tall green grass and wildflower meadows. In the Autumn the giant trees are bursting with beautiful colors and the pumpkin patch season is in full swing. The Island has many protected natural areas and there are a few rules to know before making plans for your family session.

Seasonal Closures

From October 1st – April 1st many of the island natural areas are unfortunately only accessible to hunters. While other areas are closed to protect nesting areas for the island’s bird population. But don’t worry, there are several great locations are open all year-round. Check out the Sauvie Island Website to find out about current closures.

Parking Permits

Several locations require a day pass or parking permit. You definitely want to purchase a day pass for your family session if the area requires. The costs are minimal and enforcement is pretty strict. Plus it helps to support the preservation of the Island’s wildlife!

Dog Restrictions

Many locations on Sauvie Island are dog friendly but make sure to check before bringing your pets to your family shoot. As mentioned before, Sauvie Island is a protected natural area and dogs are not allowed due to wildlife sanctuaries.
