How to plan a family session at Smith Rock State park

Smith Rock State Park is a stunning wonder of Oregon. It’s located about 30 minutes north of Bend, OR and just 15 minutes north of Redmond. It’s a world class rock climbing destination and people vist from all over the world to scale the massive cliffs. The rock towering rock formations and the peaceful crooked river running through the valley makes for some beautiful scenery for a family photo session.

What is the best time of year for a family photo session at smith rock?

Unlike family photo locations in Portland, Central oregon has much sunnier weather and a longer season for photo sessions. Spring and Fall at Smith Rock is a beautiful time of year to explore the area. Sunset occurs at a decent time (around 7pm) and it’s easy to get a session in before dinner! If you’re planning a Summer family session in the area, I would suggest scheduling an early morning session before 9am. The summer heat at Smith Rock can be intense late June through Early September. Being sweaty and uncomfortable is never fun for anyone!

What is the best time of day to schedule a family session at smith rock?

As mentioned above, sunset is always a beautiful time of day for a photo session. The light shines through the rock formations and blankets the Smith Rock valley with soft light. A morning family session would be a great alternative as well. There aren’t many opportunities for shade within the park, so defintiely avoid planning a mid-day session.

Are there any fees at smith rock?

There is a $5 day use fee at Smith Rock. You can pay with a card at one of their parking kiosks.
